SEUSSICAL JR. (Jan-Apr 2025)
Next up is Seussical Jr. for the Biggest Little Theatre Company. For my third show, I designed the set and did most of the elements myself. This included a Seuss style set of stairs, as well as four blocks. The blocks were painted in red and white stripes and as foliage to match the green stairs.
We also used the tower again, this time as the Jungle of Nool, Whoville and the Circus. Each mural is again, 4 by 10 feet, and hand painted.
For this show I also got to try out costuming! I put together and made Mr. Mayor's outfit, Mayzie and the bird girls, Gertrude as the whole outfits. I also made Sour Kangaroo's puppet and ears, Horton's ears and hat, and some other pieces here and there.
OH! I also made these awesome LED Clovers so Horton's would light up when he talked to Jojo and Mr. Mayor, and to convey the Who's emotions. But there were 12 other clovers used in a dance number, which Travis helped rig up to the light board so we could set and control all the timing and colors! Super cool!
Okay so here was my original concept sketch. After talking with the director and comparing notes, we made only a few small changes to the design, but it's almost entirely the same!
And of course, prop drawings! The bathtub ended up being a tupperware/storage bin instead, but the bush and clovers were made, and sat up stage left throughout the show.
Annnnd here's how everything looked put together:
For costuming, I suggested and sketched up some concepts for the Whos and Jungle creatures ensemble. My vision was to use existing Seuess characters and creatures. However, the art director preferred a more generalized animal/people concept instead, so these weren't used but I thought I would share!
This was such a fun show, and my favourite kid's show I've done to date!
